A Notre Dame alumnus who last week launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for cancer research in memory of a football star?s late girlfriend said he is ?shell-shocked? by the news that the woman didn?t exist, says the Associated Press.
Dan Tudescom a 2006 Notre Dame graduate, set up the IndieGogo page to raise $5,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on January 9, two days after his alma mater lost college football?s national championship game. Donations were to be made in memory of Lennay Kekua, who supposedly died cancer last fall, and in honor of Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te?o, who throughout the season referred to Ms. Kekua as his girlfriend.
The IndieGogo drive had?raised more than $4,000 when sports news Web site Deadspin reported Jan. 16 that Ms. Kekua did not exist.
