can't open on iPad or iPhone

Not sure if it's related or not - but seems to be the same.

That being said, here's an update now that worship is over:? The other staff member's ipad ended up having the same behavior as mine.? We tried both our wifi network and over 3G.? So, I proceeded to use my backup plan by reading the sermon notes from the Pages app.? At 11:00, right as worship started, I decided to check my iPad one more time.? It loaded, and I was able to use it as intended.? Later I talked to the staff member, who said that his started working right around that time too.? So, it worked out this time.

(AP) ? Sydney's skyline erupted with tons of exploding fireworks as revelers cheered in the new year from the city's crammed harbor in the world's first major celebration for 2013.

The enthusiastic welcome to 2013 was continuing on a grand scale across Asia.

Increasingly democratic Myanmar is having a public countdown for the first time. Jakarta plans a huge street party befitting Indonesia's powering economy.

The buoyant economies of the Asia-Pacific are prepared to party with renewed optimism despite the so-called fiscal cliff threatening to reverberate globally from the United States and the tattered economies of Europe.

Celebrations were planned around the world, with hundreds of thousands expected to fill Times Square in New York City to watch the drop of a Waterford crystal-studded ball.

Major cities across austerity-hit Europe were to burn off part of their battered budgets in spectacular fireworks displays, although some municipalities ? including the Cypriot capital, Nicosia ? canceled their celebrations in light of the economic crisis. Nicosia said 16,000 euros ($21,000) saved from the canceled event will be given to some 320 needy schoolchildren.

Sydney's balmy summer night was split by 7 tons of fireworks fired from roof tops and barges, many cascading from the Sydney Harbor Bridge, in a 6.6 million Australian dollar ($6.9 million) pyrotechnic extravaganza billed by organizers as the world's largest.

Eager revelers camped Sunday night to get the best vantage points.

In Hong Kong, this year's 12.5 million Hong Kong dollar ($1.6 million) fireworks display is said to be the biggest ever in the southern Chinese city. Police expected as many as 100,000 people to watch.

One day after dancing in the snow to celebrate the first anniversary of leader Kim Jong Un's ascension to supreme commander, North Koreans were preparing to mark the arrival of the new year, marked as "Juche 102" on North Korean calendars. Juche means self-reliance, the North Korean ideology of independence promoted by national founder Kim Il Sung, who was born 102 years ago. His grandson now rules North Korea.

In New Delhi, the festive mood was marred by the death Saturday of a young rape victim.

Hotels, clubs and residents' associations in the Indian capital decided to cancel planned festivities and asked people to light candles to express their solidarity with the victim whose plight sparked public rallies for women's safety.

"Let there be no New Year celebrations across the country. It will be a major tribute to the departed soul," said Praveen Khandelwal, secretary-general of the Confederation of All India Traders, an umbrella group of operators of shops and businesses across the country.

In a field in Myanmar's largest city, Yangon, workers were testing a giant digital countdown screen with the backdrop of the revered Shwedagon pagoda.

Arranged by local Forever Media group and Index Creative Village, a Thai event organizer, the celebration is the first public New Year countdown in Myanmar, a country ruled for almost five decades by military regimes that discouraged or banned big public gatherings.

"We are planning this public New Year event because we want residents of Yangon to enjoy the public countdown like in other countries," said Win Thura Hlaing, managing director of Forever Blossom company, a subsidiary of Forever Media.

With live music performances by celebrities, light shows, food stalls, fireworks and other activities, the countdown is expected to draw 50,000 people, Win Thura Hlaing said.

Jakarta's street party centers on a 7-kilometer (4-mile) thoroughfare closed to all traffic from nightfall until after midnight. Workers erected 16 large stages along the normally car-clogged, eight-lane highway through the heart of the city. Indonesia's booming economy is a rare bright spot amid global gloom and is bringing prosperity ? or the hope of it ? to Indonesians.

Spirits in the capital have been further raised by the election of a new, populist governor who is pledging to tackle the city's massive infrastructure problems.

The Sydney crowds were undiminished by Australian government warnings that the Washington deadlock on the U.S. debt crisis was partly to blame for a slowing Australian economy.

Australian pop singer Kylie Minogue hosted the event.

Florida tourist Melissa Sjostedt was among the thousands gathered near a southern pylon of the bridge. She said before the event that seeing the fireworks would fulfill an ambition that began a decade ago when she read about them in National Geographic magazine.

"Ever since that, I've always wanted to see this for real, live, in person," she said.

Despite a somber mood in the Philippines due to devastation from a recent typhoon, a key problem for authorities remained how to prevent revelers from setting off huge illegal firecrackers ? including some nicknamed "Goodbye Philippines" and "Bin Laden" ? that maim and injure hundreds of Filipinos each year, including many children.

A government scare tactic involving doctors displaying brutal-looking scalpels used for amputations for firecracker victims has not fully worked in the past so health officials came up with a novel idea: Go Gangnam style.

A government health official, Eric Tayag, donned the splashy outfit of South Korean star PSY and danced to his Youtube hit "Gangnam Style" video while preaching against the use of illegal firecrackers on TV, in schools and in public arenas.

"The campaign has become viral," Tayag said. "We've asked kids and adults to stay away from big firecrackers and just dance the Gangnam and they're doing it."

Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo predicted 2013 would be less turbulent than 2012 because the Chinese New Year in February will usher in the year of the snake, bringing an end to the year of the dragon, which was associated with water. Water is one of the five elements in feng shui theory, the Chinese practice of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck.

"Water is fear. So that's why we have had so much turbulence especially in the winter months," such as doomsday prophecies, school shootings and concerns about the fiscal cliff, said Lo.

"But the good news is that the coming year of the snake is the first time that fire has come back since 2007. Fire actually is the opposite to water, fire is happiness. So therefore the year of the snake is a much more optimistic year. So you can see signs of economic recovery now," he added.

Republican Senate leader urges Biden to break impasse

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is shown in this C-Span video footage as he addresses the Senate??Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday to jump into ?fiscal cliff? talks in hopes of breaking an impasse that threatens Americans with sharply higher income taxes come January 1.

In a brief speech on the Senate floor, McConnell complained that Democrats had not yet placed a counter-offer to a new Republican proposal, delivered at 7 pm on Saturday, ?despite the obvious time crunch.?

?I?m concerned about the lack of urgency here,? the Kentucky lawmaker said. ?I think we all know we?re running out of time.?

Besides conferring with his Democratic counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, McConnell said he had reached out to Biden "to see if he could help jump-start the negotiations on his side.?

McConnell added, ?The vice president and I have worked together on solutions before, and I believe we can again."

Absent a breakthrough by tomorrow, income tax rates will rise across the board while government spending on domestic and defense programs will be slashed ? a combination that some experts warn could plunge the economy into a new recession.

President Barack Obama has pressed for extending Bush-era tax rates on income up to $250,000 but letting them expire above that threshold. Republicans have resisted raising taxes on income at all levels. The two sides have also been at odds on issues like the estate tax and whether to extend unemployment benefits that stand to expire for some two million Americans.

Republican aides said that McConnell and Biden had spoken several times. A Biden aide said the vice president went to the White House after spending Christmas with his family in Delaware.

?We?re willing to work with whoever, whoever can help,? McConnell said. ?There?s no single issue that remains an impossible sticking point. The sticking point appears to be a willingness, an interest, or frankly the courage to close the deal.?

?I?m willing to get this done, but I need a dance partner,? he said.

Reid said he had spoken several times on Sunday with Obama but acknowledged that his side had been ?unable? to present a counter-offer to the latest Republican proposal.

?He and the vice president, I wish them well. In the meantime I will continue to try to come up something but at this stage I don?t have a counter-offer to make,? Reid said. ?We are apart on some pretty big issues.?

Reid said he remained "hopeful but realistic" about the prospects for a breakthrough.

But he also seemed to confirm that one key sticking point was a Republican demand for reducing Social Security payments but adopting a less generous cost-of-living calculation known as ?chained CPI? (the CPI being ?consumer price index,? a measure of inflation).

?We?re not going to have any Social Security cuts,? Reid declared, saying it would not be ?appropriate? in a short-term deal. Democratic leaders have cautiously signaled support for that approach ? but only as part of a larger-scale deal that would see the U.S. debt limit raised for a significant stretch of time. Republicans want to use the debt ceiling fight to wrangle deeper government spending cuts.

?We're willing to make difficult concessions as part of a balanced, comprehensive agreement,? Reid said, ?but we'll not agree to cut Social Security benefits as part of a small or short-term agreement, especially if that agreement gives more handouts to the rich.?

Republican aides bristled at Reid's characterization, noting that Democrats had not yet returned with a counter-offer. "If they don't like the CPI thing, they can strike it out," one told Yahoo News.

Republican senators, meanwhile, emerged from a closed door party meeting saying that chained CPI was off the table for now. The proposal was "not a winning hand" in the current standoff, John McCain told reporters drily.

Republican House Speaker John Boehner has said that it's up to the Senate to craft a compromise that can clear both chambers of Congress. Boehner suffered an embarrassing setback 10 days ago when conservative opposition forced him to withdraw legislation that would have let taxes rise on income of above $1 million. But a senior Republican aide noted that the exercise allowed the speaker to gauge how many of his rank-and-file would accept any increase in tax rates.

Controversial former England captain Greig dies

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Former England captain Tony Greig, one of the architects of cricket's World Series revolution in the 1970s, has died at the age of 66 after suffering a heart attack at his Sydney home on Saturday.

Greig, who was diagnosed with lung cancer in October, was taken to a Sydney hospital but died at about 1:45 pm (0245 GMT).

"The staff of the emergency department worked on Mr Greig to no avail," a spokesman at St Vincent's hospital told local media.

A larger-than-life figure standing 6ft 6in (1.98 metres), South Africa-born Greig was an outstanding all-rounder who played 58 tests for England from 1972-77, scoring 3,599 runs at 40.43 including eight centuries and claiming 141 wickets at 32.20 each. He was also a brilliant slip fielder, taking 87 catches in test matches.

Greig could bowl at either a lively medium-pace or, on occasion, employ quickish off-spin, using his height and bounce in the latter style to take 13 wickets and win a test match in the Caribbean.

But Greig and controversy were never far apart and on the same West Indies tour in 1974 he ran out Alvin Kallicharran while the batsman was walking back to the pavilion after the last ball of the day had been bowled.

Technically Kallicharran was out as the umpire had not yet indicated play had officially ended, but after spectators invaded the ground and threatened to riot, the batsman was recalled.

Later that year on the Ashes tour of Australia, Greig sometimes seemed to be playing the Australians on his own as Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson blitzed the hapless England batsmen with their pace, menace and bounce.

He was promoted to the captaincy in the following year after England lost the first Ashes test at home and immediately infused his own aggression and determination into the team who drew the next three tests against one of the strongest sides in history.

WEST INDIES OUTRAGED

However, in 1976 Greig attracted further unwanted controversy before a series against West Indies when he said he intended to make the tourists "grovel".

The use of the word by a white South African in a time of heightened racial tensions enraged the West Indies, whose fast bowlers noticeably lifted their pace when Greig arrived at the crease on their way to a 3-0 series victory.

Greig's biggest impact on the game came after he joined forces in 1977 with late Australian businessman Kerry Packer to set up the breakaway World Series Cricket (WSC) competition.

Media magnate Packer's concept, aimed at securing cricket broadcast rights for his Channel Nine in Australia, shook up the game's world order by pioneering limited overs matches played at night and turning cricketers into full-time professionals.

Greig's signature lent credibility to WSC and he played a key role in recruiting disaffected players to the controversial competition which lasted only two years but permanently changed the face of the game.

"He influenced all those guys from overseas, certainly, and the West Indies to join World Series Cricket and it was great for cricket what he had done," former Australia batsman Doug Walters, who played in the WSC competition, told Sky News.

"Greig was one of the great competitors of cricket...he was someone that really took the fight to Australia, but he took the fight to everybody.

"Win, lose or draw he was the first guy in our dressing room with a couple of beers in his hands."

COMBATIVE CHARACTER

Greig's recruitment to WSC's cause put him at loggerheads with cricket's conservative establishment and he was stripped of the England captaincy in 1977. His international career ended that year after he had made a typically whole-hearted contribution under Mike Brearley to England's Ashes success at home.

A long-time resident Down Under, Greig later became a cricket commentator with Channel Nine, having been promised a "job for life" by Packer.

A combative and occasionally abrasive character, Greig's booming voice and signature white hat featured on Australian television screens for over three decades, but his battle with cancer prevented him from taking his position behind the microphone for the current 2012/13 season.

"It's a great loss to world cricket. To me personally I'm shattered," said former Australia captain Bill Lawry, who spent decades alongside Greig in Nine's commentary box.

"World cricket's lost one of its greatest ambassadors."

Tributes flowed for Greig, who went from being a villain to a highly-respected cricket pundit in his adopted country.

"RIP Tony Greig!! You have left a great footprint on the world of cricket. My condolences to the Greig family," retired West Indies batting great Brian Lara said in a post on his Twitter account.

"Not only was he a wonderful player and a very successful player for England, I think he was a wonderful guy," Australia captain Michael Clarke told Australian television.

England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive David Collier said Greig had been "an extremely talented all-round cricketer and captain".

"He was a giant of a man who played a major role in the changing face of cricket during the 1970s," Collier said in a statement

Analysis: After "fiscal cliff" dive, more battles, new cliffs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Whether or not the "fiscal cliff" impasse is broken before the New Year's Eve deadline, there will be no post-cliff peace in Washington.

With the political climate toxic in Congress as the cliff's steep tax hikes and spending cuts approach, other partisan fights loom, all over the issue that has paralyzed the capital for the past two years: federal spending.

The first will come in late February when the Treasury Department runs out of borrowing authority and has to come to Congress to get the debt ceiling raised.

The next is likely in late March, when a temporary bill to fund the government runs out, confronting Congress with a deadline to act or face a government shutdown. The third will possibly be whenever the temporary bill replacing the temporary bill expires.

While Congress is supposed to pass annual spending bills before the start of each fiscal year, it has failed to complete that process since 1996, resorting to stopgap funding ever since.

Influential anti-tax activist Grover Norquist predicted in an interview with Reuters that conservatives would wage repeated battles with President Barack Obama to demand budget savings every time the government needs a temporary funding bill or more borrowing capacity.

The so-called "continuing resolutions" to which a divided Congress has increasingly resorted to keep the government operating, provide a "very powerful tool" to pry out spending cuts, said Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.

Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee said he will not be satisfied until there are substantial cuts to federal retirement and healthcare benefits known as entitlements, producing savings in the $4.5 trillion to $5 trillion range.

"Unfortunately for America," said Corker, "the next line in the sand will be the debt ceiling."

Most observers see the $16.4 trillion debt limit as the true fiscal cliff in the new year because if not increased, it would eventually lead to a default on U.S. Treasury debt, an event that could prove cataclysmic for financial markets.

The Treasury Department said on Wednesday it would start taking extraordinary measures by December 31 to extend its borrowing capacity for about two more months.

'POISONOUS CLIMATE'

It was a deadlock over raising the debt ceiling in August 2011 that prompted a deficit reduction deal that led to a key fiscal cliff component, the $109 billion in automatic spending cuts on military and domestic programs.

If the fiscal cliff's spending cuts or tax increases are left even partly unresolved on December 31, the political combat over them will carry over into the new Congress, possibly simultaneously with the debt ceiling debate.

"We would be pessimistic of a quick fix" if the deadline is missed, Sean West, head U.S. analyst at Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy, said in a note to clients. "The political climate will be poisoned. The new Congress will need time to settle in."

"We are concluding one of the most unsuccessful Congresses in history," Democratic Representative John Dingell of Michigan declared in a statement on Saturday, "noteworthy not only for its failure to accomplish anything of importance, but also for the poisonous climate of the institution."

Dingell, 86, is the longest serving member of the House, elected first in 1955.

Historically, bitter struggles in Congress like that over the fiscal cliff lead to further resentment and strife in a cycle of cumulative grudges that now spans nearly 30 years.

Many analysts and lobbyists in Washington believe the strife could get even worse because the new Congress convening on January 3 will include fewer members from moderate or swing districts and more from districts tilted heavily to the left or the right.

Republicans in particular are likely to face their most serious re-election challenges in 2014 not from Democrats but from conservative Republicans challenging them in primary elections.

"Ironically," said a post-election analysis published by the law firm Patton Boggs, "the voters have elected a 113th Congress that may be even more partisan than the 112th."

Research the methods other people have applied to be successful. Pay special attention to their mistakes, as well as their overall strategies, so that you don?t have to learn the hard way. Think of reading about their stories as an important step in your own development.

With any good personal development goal, you should be able to see the distance between your current state and the one you want to achieve. This is the best way to be able to set a course of direction to get there. By living in denial of these facts, you will sabotage your efforts of reaching your true potential.

TIP! In order to be properly motivated toward personal development goals, it is important to admit how much you do not know. You will want to learn all you can, once you realize that you have only scratched the surface of all there is to be known.

Do away with unneeded aggravation in your life. Avoid over-reacting when something doesn?t turn out the way you want, because it can cause you stress. Work on remembering that sometimes, things just go wrong no matter how well you plan. You need to put your focus on overcoming these obstacles, rather than becoming discouraged or giving up.

Never force yourself to work beyond your physical limitations as you pursue your goals. Take your best shot, but know when you have reached your limit. Don?t neglect your body when your are striving to meet your goal. Short-changing your body in order to meet self improvement goals is a terribly counter-productive form of self-improvement.

Prepare for emergency expenses. Even the slightest unforeseen event can send a person?s finances spiraling into free fall. If you put back just a few dollars every week you will quickly build up an emergency fund. This fund can be crucial in both your immediate and distant future as you work toward decreasing debt, rather than accumulating it.

TIP! Overreacting in any situation will cause your anxiety levels to raise. Dealing with your stress in a healthy, constructive manner will improve your overall mental wellbeing.

Do not be afraid to take risks in the pursuit of happiness. Being a little too risk-averse carries its own dangers, because someone who avoids failure or rejection at all costs can wind up feeling safe, but unsatisfied. If you take risks, chances are you will be happier.

The most effective way to increase your success for self improvement is to start using the powerful advice above, beginning today. You can only succeed if you try. If you apply what you?ve just read, you?ll see changes in yourself before you know it.

San Diego Real Estate: Mortgage Defaults Diving ? CT Homes LLC

Are San Diego foreclosures really declining or is it all more statistical tricks, in an attempt to make the market look healthy?

The latest round of figures from DataQuick and UT San Diego show a steep and steady decline in the local foreclosure rate. The figures show a 15% drop in notices of default being filed between October and November, to half of what we were seeing this time last year. This puts San Diego County at a measly 819 foreclosure notices last month, the lowest rate since August 2006.

This all sounds like incredibly positive news and in combination with rising home sales volume and home prices suggests we truly are in recovery mode if not entering a new boom era.

Still, San Diego real estate prices still have about a 30% climb to go before hitting their previous high, and before we can really call an officially and completely healed market.

However, are these statistics really painting a true picture of the market or are they being skewed by other factors?

Lower foreclosure figures could certainly be accounted for by at least two other factors. The first being the massive trend in short sales. 40,000 Californian homes have reportedly been sold as short sale since the mortgage settlement, but anyway you count them, it means they are being recycled.

The second could be mortgage lenders holding back on actually filing foreclosures. In fact it was just revealed that Bank of America alone has over $64 billion of 180 day or more delinquent home loans on the books which have not had foreclosure notices filed against them.

Fortunately, most real estate agents and investors are actually crying out for more distressed home inventory as we are now down to only about half of the available homes as 3 years ago. If this is accurate, the San Diego foreclosure crisis peaked in 2009.

This would indicate about another 3 years of foreclosures trailing off while San Diego builds on its reputation as one of the healthiest real estate markets in the country.

Keen Advice On Commercial Real Estate - Maynas Eric

Having to deal with the commercial property business can be stressful and overwhelming for those new to it and even to those experienced with it. In the following article, you are going to be provided with information that is meant to help ease some of the stress you may feel from your commercial real estate venture.

If you rent out your commercial properties, always remember to keep them occupied. Having unoccupied spaces mean that you have to pay for their upkeep. If you have several properties open, you should ask yourself why, and attempt to correct the issues that may be driving out your tenants.

Make sure to find your lender before making an offer on any commercial property. Speak with your investors and friends to make a small list of the area?s best lenders. Research the prospective lenders and choose the one that can accommodate you before you begin to scout for property. It will be easier to qualify for your loan when you have all the details organized in advance.

TIP! You need to be able to spot good deals to be able to make them advantageous to you. Those who are pros at real estate can quickly tell a great deal from a bad one.

If you are going into commercial real estate, it?s best to have multiple sources of cash, including a loan, as well as backing from family and friends. Have written contracts drafted by a lawyer so that you?re protected in any situation. There are two repayment options: paying it off at a certain interest rate, or paying due to profit.

Take into account how the establishment of an ideal rent expectation can affect your future business prospects. Don?t talk to potential tenants until you have figured out your rental fee structure. This will keep you from straying from your overall business plan, ensuring an increased chance for future success in regard to your investment.

When you are buying commercial real estate, find some opportunities that will let you buy a bigger building. Taking care of more units does not cost much more and this will bring down the price of every individual unit.

TIP! Be ambitious and forward-thinking in your commercial real estate investments. If you want to get a building that has five units, you need to know that?s it?s no different to manage than 50.

You need to realize that every property has a lifetime. You could make a big mistake by ignoring what you may eventually have to spend in order to keep up with the upkeep of the property. The property might be in need of new roofing, or utility upgrades like wiring. All building require maintenance, and some buildings require more expensive maintenance than others. Make sure that you budget future repairs and maintenance work into your budget.

Record problems by taking digital pictures of them. Be especially diligent in photographing any flaws that exist when you move in, like cracks in the wall or stains on the carpet.

Get a site checklist if you are viewing more than one property. Whilst you can take the first proposal responses, make sure that you don?t go any further without first informing the property owners of your plans. Don?t fear telling the owners that you might be interested in other properties. Letting this fact slip may even result in your getting a more lucrative deal.

TIP! In commercial real estate, there are different kind of brokers. For example, full-service brokers represent both the landlord and tenants.

Location is vital to commercial real estate. When investing in a property, consider what type of neighborhood it is located in. Compare its growth to similar areas. This is important, as you don?t want to be in a current growth area only to have the neighborhood stagnate in a few years.

Looking for that perfect piece of commercial property can seem like an endless journey, with much to learn for even the most experienced buyers. That is why this article was written, to help people like you have a pleasant and low stress experience in the hunt for commercial property.

TIP! Take your time and read the fine print if the owner asks you to sign lease forms. Big real estate companies will sometimes slip additional covenants or requirements into the lease document, which can at times be very long.

(AP) ? Truth is, retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf didn't care much for his popular "Stormin' Norman" nickname.

The seemingly no-nonsense Desert Storm commander's reputed temper with aides and subordinates supposedly earned him that rough-and-ready moniker. But others around the general, who died Thursday in Tampa, Fla., at age 78 of complications from pneumonia, knew him as a friendly, talkative and even jovial figure who preferred the somewhat milder sobriquet given by his troops: "The Bear."

That one perhaps suited him better later in his life, when he supported various national causes and children's charities while eschewing the spotlight and resisting efforts to draft him to run for political office.

He lived out a quiet retirement in Tampa, where he'd served his last military assignment and where an elementary school bearing his name is testament to his standing in the community.

Schwarzkopf capped an illustrious military career by commanding the U.S.-led international coalition that drove Saddam Hussein's forces out of Kuwait in 1991 ? but he'd managed to keep a low profile in the public debate over the second Gulf War against Iraq, saying at one point that he doubted victory would be as easy as the White House and the Pentagon predicted.

Schwarzkopf was named commander in chief of U.S. Central Command at Tampa's MacDill Air Force Base in 1988, overseeing the headquarters for U.S. military and security concerns in nearly two dozen countries stretching across the Middle East to Afghanistan and the rest of central Asia, plus Pakistan.

When Saddam invaded Kuwait two years later to punish it for allegedly stealing Iraqi oil reserves, Schwarzkopf commanded Operation Desert Storm, the coalition of some 30 countries organized by President George H.W. Bush that succeeded in driving the Iraqis out.

At the peak of his postwar national celebrity, Schwarzkopf ? a self-proclaimed political independent ? rejected suggestions that he run for office, and remained far more private than other generals, although he did serve briefly as a military commentator for NBC.

While focused primarily on charitable enterprises in his later years, he campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2000, but was ambivalent about the 2003 invasion of Iraq. In early 2003 he told The Washington Post that the outcome was an unknown: "What is postwar Iraq going to look like, with the Kurds and the Sunnis and the Shiites? That's a huge question, to my mind. It really should be part of the overall campaign plan."

Initially Schwarzkopf had endorsed the invasion, saying he was convinced that Secretary of State Colin Powell had given the United Nations powerful evidence of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. After that proved false, he said decisions to go to war should depend on what U.N. weapons inspectors found.

He seldom spoke up during the conflict, but in late 2004 he sharply criticized Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and the Pentagon for mistakes that included erroneous judgments about Iraq and inadequate training for Army reservists sent there.

"In the final analysis I think we are behind schedule. ... I don't think we counted on it turning into jihad (holy war)," he said in an NBC interview.

Schwarzkopf was born Aug. 24, 1934, in Trenton, N.J., where his father, Col. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, founder and commander of the New Jersey State Police, was then leading the investigation of the Lindbergh kidnap case. That investigation ended with the arrest and 1936 execution of German-born carpenter Richard Hauptmann for murdering famed aviator Charles Lindbergh's infant son.

The elder Schwarzkopf was named Herbert, but when the son was asked what his "H'' stood for, he would reply, "H."

As a teenager Norman accompanied his father to Iran, where the elder Schwarzkopf trained the Iran's national police force and was an adviser to Reza Pahlavi, the young Shah of Iran.

Young Norman studied there and in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, then followed in his father's footsteps to West Point, graduating in 1956 with an engineering degree. After stints in the U.S. and abroad, he earned a master's degree in engineering at the University of Southern California and later taught missile engineering at West Point.

In 1966 he volunteered for Vietnam and served two tours, first as a U.S. adviser to South Vietnamese paratroops and later as a battalion commander in the U.S. Army's Americal Division. He earned three Silver Stars for valor ? including one for saving troops from a minefield ? plus a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and three Distinguished Service Medals.

While many career officers left military service embittered by Vietnam, Schwarzkopf was among those who opted to stay and help rebuild the tattered Army into a potent, modernized all-volunteer force.

After Saddam invaded Kuwait in August 1990, Schwarzkopf played a key diplomatic role by helping persuade Saudi Arabia's King Fahd to allow U.S. and other foreign troops to deploy on Saudi territory as a staging area for the war to come.

On Jan. 17, 1991, a five-month buildup called Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm as allied aircraft attacked Iraqi bases and Baghdad government facilities. The six-week aerial campaign climaxed with a massive ground offensive on Feb. 24-28, routing the Iraqis from Kuwait in 100 hours before U.S. officials called a halt.

Schwarzkopf said afterward he agreed with Bush's decision to stop the war rather than drive to Baghdad to capture Saddam, as his mission had been only to oust the Iraqis from Kuwait.

But in a desert tent meeting with vanquished Iraqi generals, he allowed a key concession on Iraq's use of helicopters, which later backfired by enabling Saddam to crack down more easily on rebellious Shiites and Kurds.

While he later avoided the public second-guessing by academics and think tank experts over the ambiguous outcome of the first Gulf War and its impact on the second Gulf War, he told The Washington Post in 2003, "You can't help but ... with 20/20 hindsight, go back and say, 'Look, had we done something different, we probably wouldn't be facing what we are facing today.'"

After retiring from the Army in 1992, Schwarzkopf wrote a best-selling autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero." Of his Gulf War role, he said: "I like to say I'm not a hero. I was lucky enough to lead a very successful war." He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and honored with decorations from France, Britain, Belgium, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.

Schwarzkopf was a national spokesman for prostate cancer awareness and for Recovery of the Grizzly Bear, served on the Nature Conservancy board of governors and was active in various charities for chronically ill children.

"I may have made my reputation as a general in the Army and I'm very proud of that," he once told The Associated Press. "But I've always felt that I was more than one-dimensional. I'd like to think I'm a caring human being. ... It's nice to feel that you have a purpose."

Schwarzkopf and his wife, Brenda, had three children: Cynthia, Jessica and Christian.

Novel role of BRCA1 in regulating the survival of skin stem cells identified

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Researchers have uncovered a novel role of BRCA1 in regulating the survival of skin stem cells.

Our DNA, which stores our genetic information, is constantly submitted to damage. If not properly repaired, DNA damage can lead to cell death, which may in turn lead to tissue exhaustion and aging, or induce mutations resulting in uncontrolled cell proliferation and cancer. Brca1 is a key gene that mediates DNA repair. Mutations in Brca1 lead to familial and sporadic breast and ovarian cancer in humans.

In this study published in Genes and Development, researchers led by C?dric Blanpain, MD/PhD, Professor at Universit? libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and WELBIO investigator, showed the critical role of Brca1 for the maintenance of hair follicle stem cells.

Peggy Sotiropoulou and colleagues showed that upon deletion of the breast cancer associated gene Brca1 in the epidermis, hair follicle cells show high levels of DNA damage and cell death, which induce hyperproliferation and finally exhaustion of hair follicle stem cells resulting in hair follicle degeneration. In contrast, the other types of stem cells located in the epidermis, which are forming the skin barrier and the sebaceous glands, are maintained and continue to function normally despite the absence of BRCA1, demonstrating the different requirement for BRCA1 in the distinct types of adult stem cells. "We were very surprised to see that distinct types of cells residing within the same tissue may exhibit such profoundly different responses to the deletion of the same, crucial gene for DNA repair gene" comments Peggy Sotiropoulou, the first author of this study.

This work is very important to understand the DNA repair mechanisms in different types of adult stem cells and at different stages of their activation. If other stem cells of the body also require BRCA1 for their survival, this result may potentially explain why Brca1 mutations in women lead preferentially to the development of only breast and ovarian cancers.

This work was supported by the FNRS, WELBIO, the program d'excellence CIBLES of Wallonia, a research grant from the Fondation Contre le Cancer, the Fondation ULB, the Fonds Yvonne Bo?l, and the Fonds Gaston Ithier, a starting grant of the European Research Council (ERC) and the EMBO Young Investigator Program.

Causes of Lower Back Pain

Back pain is one of the common complaints of middle-aged people which often strike without any specific reason. The structure of our back is complex, made up of bones, muscles, nerves and joints. Even after repeated tests or imaging, the doctors are sometimes unable to pinpoint the actual cause of lower back pain. Neither can doctor pinpoint actual cause of it with any tests or imaging.

The discomfort of lower back is usually triggered by everyday activities, or gradually over the time as a result of sitting, standing or lifting heavy weight badly. Sometimes, you wake up in the morning with back pain without any idea of how it has happened. What has caused it?

Some of the common causes of lower back pain include:-
